The American Public Health Association, in preparation for National Public Health Week, has released a brochure with some good tips for improving safety in our families' lives. Over the next couple months, we will be updating the site regularly with quotes from the brochure. For the full brochure, please go to http://www.nphw.org/nphw11/pdf/NPHWbrochWeb.pdf Tips for the Home: "1. Assess your home for potential hazards such as poor lighting and uneven surfaces to prevent falls. 2. Install and maintain smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. 3. Establish a plan for how you would evacuate from your home in the event of an emergency. 4. Have your hot water heater checked and adjusted periodically to avoid burns. 5. Program emergency numbers, such as the Poison Control Hotline (1-800-222-1222), into your phone to call in the event of a poisoning emergency or to ask questions about how to safely store potentially hazardous substances in your home. 6. Support consumer protection policies to reduce the use of toxins in household products."
